Aspiring Authors Seek Platforms Beyond Amazon
For emerging eBook authors, the path is quite common: Write a manuscript, find a publisher and get listed on Amazon. For the more adventurous, there are additional platforms such as the Nook, Kobo and iBooks to extend your presence in the world of online books. While Google Play revises its eBook system, leaving it currently unavailable to new authors, the ability to reach audiences in foreign countries becomes more challenging. That’s where new platforms become more attractive for authors seeking the widest range of potential readers.
Getting Your Romance Novel on Russian Book Sites
Shian Serei, author of the Kingdom of Meridian Saga (see Volume 1 – The Bee Keeper’s Daughter) was frustrated by the limitations of getting books into the hands of readers in Russia, where the first book in the series takes place. “It would be ideal for the book to translated into Russian first, but I knew that a lot of people in that market read English books regularly to improve their skills. They’ve told me that they are tired of the classics, they want new stories, that resonate from their perspective rather than abroad,” said Serei.
The Russian eBook market is growing fast, but it doesn’t work in the same manner as Amazon. Small publishers and eBook services to meet their entry needs are difficult to find. Moreover, the process of ordering a printed book, even on demand versions, typically involves a local pickup location rather than direct to door delivery.
Online Book Giants in Russia: Ozon and LitRes
Aurous publishing, the momentum behind Shian’s emergence onto Amazon and other platforms, decided the idea was worth exploring. After several months of shoulder shrugs and dead ends, they found a way to get The Bee Keeper’s Daughter onto the top book sites in the Russian Federation: Ozon.ru and Litres.ru.
The success of an English book in a Russian book market remains to be seen, but the achievement offered a needed alternative to the gaps caused by Google Play’s currently closed system.
The Bee Keeper’s Daughter will debut in September 2016 on the Russian book market, with hopes of connecting the readers with an American writer’s story about their country in the medieval time of 1290AD.
Update September 3, 2016
Aurous publishing succeeded in getting The Bee Keeper’s Daughter onto Ozon.ru and Litres.ru.
